Dr. McGill

I read the book and love it. I have also read Back Mechanic. I am rehabbing and have been successful in minimizing my pain (I'm extension intolerant at this time), and not 100% pain-free. Extension DOES bother my back a little bit, but I want to do a bench only meet anyway. Is this foolish?

--

Dr. McGill

Do you believe that the squat, bench and deadlift are dangerous when performed with a pristine form for the average gym-goer?

--

Dr. McGill

What are your thoughts on chiropractic adjustments overall for a healthy spine? For instance, hip adjustments moving the lumbar and sacral areas when they get tight?

--

Dr. McGill

I'm in only moderate pain while squatting and deadlifting and as long as it's lightweight. Should I back off the weight and rehab to build some capacity or can I build this capacity while lifting light still?

Dr. McGill

I have worked my way through back mechanic and have been back pain free for some time now. I am back to lifting but I still have some remnants of nerve-tingling (not pain) in my lower leg/ankle from the nerve root coming from l5-s1. Again, no pain and I notice this going away slowly. Is this normal to take longer than the back pain to subside?

Dr.Mcgill:

How to help those who with "extremely" tight and contracted QL and spinal erectors on same side as lumbar disc herniations where various soft tissue treatments such as Active release technique have been ineffective? In addition do you have any nutritional suggestions that would aid in the grisling of a damaged disc?

--

Dr. Mcgill:

I've been dealing with chronic low back pain since 2012. I got the following results from my MRI July 2017

IMPRESSION: 1. Spondylosis and disc herniation on the right at L5-S1 could affect the exiting right L5 nerve.

2. Diffuse disc changes and minimal extrusion at L4-5 could affect the left and less likely the right L5 nerve roots in the lateral recess.

Is it wise/healthy to continue to squat and and deadlift with this injury?

--

Dr. McGill

In my practice I see a anterior Iliac rotation of the right side often. As well as flexed sacral torsions with the inferior lateral angle lower on the left and the sulcus at l5 s1 deeper on the right. Treating the soft tissue for this doesn't seem to help much. Do you have any suggestions?

--

Dr. McGill - I am a little confused about how to perform the Big 3 exercises properly, the breathing patterns are stated but not explained and how to you lift your head off of the floor for the curl up without moving the neck?

--
Brian - How are you doing now? Do you ever experience back pain anymore and do you continue to train at a high level?

--

Dr. McGill

I am a fitness professional and we have many people coming to us with movement inefficiencies and the inability to accurately assess their movement. Poor motor control and poor awareness. How do you address this challenge when trying to teach them the big 3?

--

Brian

Do you get massage currently and do you foam roll?

--

Brian

How are you currently training right now?
Right now, I’m training for health, general fitness and weak point training.

--

Brian

Are you currently ever in pain from all the years of lifting so much weight?

--

Brian

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about about the process?

--

Brian and Dr. McGill

What are your thoughts on the popularity of hip thrusters for strength and is it transferable to the squat and dead? How about hypertrophy?

--

Brian and Dr. McGill:

Just would like to thank you both for all of the work you've done as it's truly helped me move forward in my career as a strength coach and as someone who has suffered from severe chronic low back pain as well.

Anyways, my question is for Dr. McGill.

At age 20 I was diagnosed with a disc protrusion in my low back that caused me significant pain (e.g., nerve pain, muscle spasms) for almost about 2 years. I couldn't sleep at nights and even contemplated taking my life at one point similar to Brian's story since I wasn't getting the right treatment from numerous doctors, pt's and chiro's that I had seen.

Anyways, after about 2 years I was able to make own pain free recovery by taking control of my own rehab and was fortunate enough to stumble upon your material, which was a Godsend. Anyways, it's been about 3 and a half years since my initial MRI and I recently just had a follow up MRI, which still showed similar results to my initial MRI. The disc protrusion still exists and hasn't seemed to change at all in structure.. Was just wondering what is the reasoning for this and why am I essentially pain free if the disc protrusion still exists?
