In this video, I will explain why Manipur is burning and what is the root cause of the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. I will also show you some viral videos that capture the horrific scenes of arson, vandalism, killing, looting and rape that have taken place in the state since May 2023. This is a serious issue that needs more attention and awareness from the media and the public.

The violence started when the Meitei community, which is the majority in the Imphal valley, demanded the Scheduled Tribe status from the government, which was opposed by the Kuki community, which is the predominant minority in the surrounding hills. The Kuki community accused the Meitei-led government of using a war on drugs as a pretext to evict them from their ancestral lands and forests. The Meitei community felt insecure by the influx of refugees from Myanmar after the military coup in 2021. The two communities have also clashed over land rights, political representation and religious differences.

The violence has claimed more than 180 lives, injured more than 300 people, displaced more than 60,000 people and destroyed hundreds of churches and temples. Women have been targeted and humiliated by sexual assault and mutilation. Security forces have been accused of being biased and partisan. A peace committee has been formed to investigate the violence and restore normalcy, but the situation remains tense and volatile.
