LAKE ALMANOR EARTHQUAKES--UPDATE 7:05 PM, THURSDAY MAY 11, 2023: Little damage reported. The FIRST QUAKE was Magnitude 5.5 in the south-central portion of Lake Almanor, at almost 4:20 PM PDT, and has been followed by a series of aftershocks since then, ranging from 2.5 to 3.0.

The 911 Center in Susanville says it has had surprisingly few damage reports—not what they expected—particularly when a 5.7 quake in May 2013 DID do "significant damage". (See below) Today, a gas leak and damage to a cabin was reported at Plumas Pines Resort on the west shore. A tree fell into a house on the Peninsula, and alarms went off.

The Plumas County Sheriff's Office also had few calls.

The quake was felt in widely separated parts of Northern California, including many report in Yuba and Sutter Counties. The initial quake was also felt 120 miles south-south west in the Sacramento area, by people on the 10-floor of a San Francisco building even farther away, and by people in Sparks, Nevada just east of Reno, according to their comments on the Sacramento National Weather Service tweet about the quake.

This same Lake Almanor area had damage from a 5.7 quake May 23, 2013, just shy of ten years ago.

"The (2013) earthquake cracked foundations, broke chimneys, and ruptured plumbing around Lake Almanor. We canvassed communities around the lake and to the south and east for earthquake damage, adding reports from our interviews to the geocoded 'Did You Feel It?' reports and to a set of damage reports collected by the Plumas County Office of Emergency Services. Three communities suffered significant damage. In Lake Almanor West, 14 km and 290° from the hypocenter, one wood-frame house was shifted on its foundation, the cripple wall of another house was racked, and water and gas pipes in five houses were ruptured. This damage indicates the shaking approached MMI 8. In Lake Almanor Country Club, 10 km and 310° from the hypocenter, more than 40 chimneys were cracked, broken, or collapsed, a coupling for the municipal water tank was ruptured, and a 200-foot long fissure opened on a slope facing the lake."

Lake Almanor was formed in 1914 when the North Fork of the Feather River was dammed by Great Western Power and a valley meadow was flooded. A larger dam was built in 1926-27 creating a lake nearly twice the size of the original. It is 90 feet deep at its deepest point.
