Before becoming a disciple of the dark side, Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker, a goodhearted Jedi and the Clone Wars hero. While he was considered one of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, Anakin had broken the Orderâs code by secretly marrying Senator PadmĂ© Amidala. When he began to suffer visions that PadmĂ© would die in childbirth, Anakin sought a way to prevent this fate. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, a mentor to the young Jedi, claimed that the dark side was a pathway to this ability: he could stop people from dying with Sith power. At the same time, the Chancellor revealed that he himself was a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, and would train Anakin. Confused and conflicted, Anakin ultimately succumbed to Sidiousâ temptations. Rechristened as Darth Vader, he became an agent of evil. Sidious assumed the mantle of Emperor, and Vader helped the Empire destroy the Jedi Order; without mercy, Anakin led a legion of clones into the Jedi Temple, and personally killed both fully trained Jedi and novice younglings alike. On the lava planet Mustafar, where he had been sent to assassinate Separatist leaders, Vader battled his former Master and friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin fought aggressively, ignoring Obi-Wan's pleas to come to his senses. Ultimately, the Jedi Master bested the new Sith. Vader was left severely injured and burned on the banks of a lava river, filled with anger and hate. He was found by the Emperor and encased in frightening black armor that kept him alive, and given mechanical lungs that emitted an ominous breathing sound with his every step. Anakin Skywalker was no more. After the Jedi Order was all but eradicated by the Emperor and Darth Vader, Obi-Wan hid on Tatooine, watching over Luke Skywalker and waiting to teach him the ways of the Force. Finally, fate intervened, and Obi-Wan found himself rescuing Luke from Tusken Raiders. Back in his hut, Obi-Wan revealed to Luke that he was friends with the boyâs father, who was also a Jedi Knight -- until Darth Vader, a former Jedi, betrayed and murdered him. Obi-Wan gave Luke his fatherâs lightsaber, encouraging him to learn about the Force and leave Tatooine. The two then uncovered a hidden message from Princess Leia Organa hidden inside R2-D2, asking Obi-Wan for help. The Jedi Master, Luke, R2-D2, C-3PO, and hired pilots Han Solo and Chewbacca headed for Alderaan, the Princessâ home planet. On the journey, Obi-Wan began instructing Luke in the ways of the Force and lightsaber combat; upon arrival, they found that Alderaan was gone, destroyed by the Empireâs Death Star. Their ship, the Millennium Falcon, was caught in the space stationâs tractor beam, forcing the heroes to board. They evaded capture and found that Leia was held there in a prison cell; Obi-Wan took it upon himself to deactivate the tractor beam, allowing Luke, Han, and Chewbacca to rescue the Princess. The Jedi Master was successful, but then encountered Darth Vader, his former student turned Sith. They dueled, and Obi-Wan willingly accepted his death so that Luke and his allies could escape. Later, when Luke was piloting an X-wing in the Rebel Allianceâs desperate attempt to destroy the Death Star, the disembodied voice of Obi-Wan spoke to Luke and guided him to use the Force, not his shipâs technology. The young hero delivered an impossibly precise shot into the exhaust port of the doomsday weapon, and the Death Star was no more. âThe Force will be with you,â Obi-Wan's voice told Luke. âAlways.â At a climactic point in the Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader fight, Darth Vader unleashes his Force powers and sends Kenobi into a pit, before seemingly burying the former Jedi Knight under a mountain of stone. However, Kenobi, rather than accept defeat, finds his newfound strength that the series has been establishing since Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1 and rounding off his character arc for the show. Kenobi has flashes of his adventures with Leia, as well as brief memories of Luke, and uses his need to protect Anakin's children as a means to find the strength to continue fighting. Up to this point, Obi-Wan Kenobi has established Kenobi's need to balance himself within the Force and overcome his past trauma. In using Leia and Luke as a reason to do so, Kenobi's former strength returns and allows him to escape the pit, both literally and figuratively, and overcome Vader once more. |
