Professor Ewan Fernie is the Director of the lottery-funded ‘Everything to Everybody’ Project, a pioneering collaboration with Birmingham City Council which will reanimate the world’s first great Shakespeare library for all the people of the city who theoretically own it. In this lecture, he talks about the far-sighted foundation of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Library in the mid nineteenth century, and the sweeping programme of cultural improvement of which it was a part.
