Chinese farmers in the face of rapid urbanization | Yang Lu | TEDxYouth@ZJMLIS |

Louie is a final year Urban Studies and Economics student. Focusing on Pingchang New City, the community where the campus is located, the presentation explored the changing lifestyles of Chinese farmers in the face of rapid urbanization. Maple Leaf Zhenjiang is situated on the traditional territory of Dong Xiang (东乡), a birthplace of the Wu (吴) Culture, an important port and a site of meeting and exchange since 1918, and the largest farmers’ neighbourhood in the province of Jiangsu. The neighbourhood, named Pingchang New City (平昌新城), was master-planned and built by the local government in 2009. Why did farmers leave their farmland uncultivated and move to gated complexes in Pingchang? What role does the local government play in this migration process? The presentation will outline the Case Study of Pingchang New City and provide further insights on these questions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
