From 1968-1980, America had a kind of environmental crisis. First, because of the establishment of OPEC in the Middle East, oil exportation sharply decreased and that led to fuel shortages across the U.S. As a result Americans began looking to other sources of energy like nuclear energy. Also, with the publication of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring (which highlighted the dangers of pesticides like DDT), Americans were ripe for environmental reform. That came in the form of Richard Nixon's establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and legislation like the Clean Air Act. |
