In order to learn how to defend yourself, it helps if you have the sensory experience of punches and kicks coming at you so you can learn how to calibrate to slip, weave, block, change alignment and/or distance.

Target work and limited sparring drills are best for that.

What kata teaches how to defend against a taller fighter?

What kata teaches how to defend against an aggressive or lead-off fighter?

What kata teaches how to defend against a counter fighter?

What kata teaches how to defend against someone trying to tackle you?
