Dr. Laura Esserman: Talking About Change Isn't Enough

video thumbnail
Laura Esserman, a surgeon and faculty member at the University of California at San Francisco, is engaged in a major effort to change the delivery of breast cancer services and the information systems used to support both research and patient care. In this video she talks about different types of power and how articulating change is not enough. She draws a distinction between the power that comes with earning a title such as chair of a department and the ability to influence people and their actions. Esserman reflects on her own experience and how she has inadvertently caused doors to be closed to her. She concludes with what she has learned about how to cultivate a culture for change as well as partners to pursue change.
