'Society of Preachers',[8][9] also translated as "propagation party" or "preaching party")[2][3][4]that focuses on exhorting Muslims to be more religiously observant[1] and encouraging fellow members to return to practising their religion as per the Islamic prophet Muhammad,[10] and secondarily give dawah (calling) to non-Muslims.[4] "One of the most widespread Sunni" islah (reform,[4] and called "one of the most influential religious movements in 20th-century Islam,"[11] the organisation is estimated to have between 12 and 80 million adherents worldwide,[1] in over 150 countries,[3][4][12][13] with the majority living in South Asia.[14][15] Tablighi Jamaat 2009 Malaysian Annual Congregation of Tablighi Jamaat Sepang Selangor, Malaysia Total population12 to 80 million[1]FounderMuhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi[2]ReligionsDeobandi Islam[2][3][4]ScripturesQuran, Hadith, Sunnah, and Sharia law The group encourages its followers to undertake short-term preaching missions (khuruj), lasting from a few days to a few months in groups of usually forty days and four months, to preach to Muslims reminding them of "the core teachings of the Prophet Muhammad" and encourage them to attend mosque prayers and sermons. Members "travel, eat, sleep, wash and pray together in the mosques and often observe strict regimens relating to dress and personal grooming".[1] Established in 1926 by Muhammad Ilyas al-Kandhlawi, in the Mewat region of India, it has roots in the Deobandi reformist tradition,[4] and developed as a response to the perceived deterioration of moral values and the supposed neglect of aspects of Islam.[2] The movement aims for the spiritual reformation of Islam by working at the grassroots level.[12][16] The teachings of Tabligh Jamaat are expressed in "Six Principles": Kalimah (Declaration of faith), Salah (Prayer), Ilm-o-zikr (Reading and Remembrance), Ikraam-e-Muslim (Respect for Muslims), Ikhlas-e-Niyyat (Sincerity of intention), and Dawat-o-Tableegh (Proselytization).[17] Tablighi Jamaat denies any political affiliation, involvement in debate over political or Islamic doctrine such as fiqh,[18][19][20] let alone terrorism.[18] It maintains its focus is on the study of the sacred scriptures of Islam: the Quran and the Hadith,[19][21] and that the personal spiritual renewal that results will lead to reformation of society.[1] However, the group has been accused of maintaining political links,[12] and being used by members of Islamist terrorist organisations to recruit operatives. Tablighi Jamaat Funny Video Tablighi Jamaat status Tablighi Jamaat Official Tablighi Jamaat The article examines emergence of the Tablighi Jamaat (henceforth TJ) in colonial India. It discusses the emergence of Tablighi Jamaat in light of the proselytizing (Tablighi) competition among various Islamic schools that emerged soon after the failure of the 1857 war. This article answers the question of why Maulana Ilyas founded the TJ in undivided India? This study aims to understand the emergence of the TJ in light of the deprivation and Maududian theory of Islamic revivalism. The discussion is based on qualitative analysis of the existing secondary sources in the form of books, research articles, and reports, etc. This study finds that TJ was founded because several Tablighi Jamaats belonged to different Islamic sects during British rule, responded to the challenges of the Muslim community. The Deobandi, Barailvi, Ahl-i-Hadith, and Shi’a Muslims established their proselytizing societies. This study concludes that the Deobandi Tablighi Jamaat emerged not only in response to the anti-Islamic campaigns of Hindus and Christians. The TJ was also founded in response to the preaching struggles of other Islamic schools in the British Raj. It is recommended that the TJ wowrks to implement the Deobandi version of Islam in the world should be further studied |
