The unification of Italian and German speakers into these nation states would threaten the long term stability of large multiethnic empires such as the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. Moreover, these new countries would ultimately upset the balance of power in Europe and create tensions would last through to the World Wars of the 20th century. |
