What I love about Shades of Gray, is that it's opened up a conversation for women to talk about what turns them on, and that they're reading erotic novels in book clubs all across America. To me, it's kind of like Viagra introduced the conversation about sex. This has now taken it to women to be able to say that, you know what; this is what turns me on, reading about erotic stories.

Yes, it's true that in this novel, it's about BDSM. What I love about that is, it's taking sexuality out of a binary way of thinking about it, vanilla and perverse, and recognizing that there are many different ways that you can enjoy being sexually turned on.

Even though, you may not personally want to be blind folded, whipped, or being a submissive, the idea that maybe you can take your partners tie, using it loosely as a blind fold, or as a way of restraint, can be something that you try on and see whether or not there's a part of you that likes to be a submissive.

Women for centuries have liked being dominated by men, and sometimes, even aggressively. The theme about being dominated or being submissive is not new. It's certainly one where women are so busy, and often are managing so many roles, whether they're married, a mother, or just working, and have levels of responsibility. The idea of being seduced and dominated in the bedroom, to be able to let go and lose all control, can for many women be quite an erotic turn on.
