These days, scientists frequently share dire climate change findings, and the media covers severe weather events that can be attributed to global warming. An equally important—and often underreported—aspect of this crisis is the loss of cultural traditions. For example, if a drought-stricken area cannot support a community, the people disperse and leave behind place-based traditions. As teachers, our job is to educate our students and prepare them for success during and after their formal education. This webinar will examine our role as English teachers in preparing students to develop ways to slow or change the course of the current climate crisis. First, we will define environmental education and describe how it is integrated into EFL curriculum and textbooks. Next, we will explore educators’ readiness to teach this topic and determine what professional development gaps may exist. Finally, we will focus on the local aspects of ecological challenges, including strategies to help students identify issues in their communities, making this topic more personally relevant.
