Nepal: Implementing health care sustainability & climate resilience practices |
|
Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate-induced disasters, leading to increased prevalence of vector-borne diseases, diarrheal and respiratory diseases, cardiac and mental illness, worsening food and water insecurity, and other health impacts. To gain a deeper understanding of health care’s role in addressing this issue, Health Environment and Climate Action Foundation (HECAF360) implemented a pilot project, led by Nepal’s Department of Health Services and supported by World Health Organization, in which they identified the major climate-induced disasters impacting three health care facilities in different ecological regions of Nepal, along with their adaptation and mitigation practices.
This case study was submitted as part of Health Care Without Harm’s Health Care Climate Learning Initiative. The initiative included a series of information-sharing events where representatives from health care organizations around the world met to discuss proven practices, share challenges, and collaborate on decarbonization goals and strategies, while strengthening the network necessary to continue learning from each other. https://healthcareclimateaction.org/learning-initiative Learn more about other projects with HECAF360 in Nepal https://noharm-global.org/articles/news/global/nepal-new-joint-project-health-care-waste-management #nepal #healthcare #sustainability #HCWH |
