Man United Approach Former England Striker Over Possible Transfer
Manchester United continue to scour the market for potential reinforcements after their disastrous start to the season. Manchester United continue to scour the transfer market in search of reinforcements following their dreadful start to the new Premier League season. Although Erik ten Hag has been unable to bring in his first choice targets to date, few would have predicted just how bad it would be and a 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion followed by the 4-0 hammering by Brentford this past weekend have brought familiar feelings back to the surface. The Red Devils are simply refusing to give up on primary target Frenkie de Jong as they look to strengthen their midfield, whilst a new goalkeeper and right-back are also considered to be high on the agenda. Perhaps just as important as the centre-midfield role is that of an out-and-out attacker, with ten Hag having just Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial to call upon. Ronaldo's future remains in doubt though, whilst the fitness of Martial can never be relied upon and United infamously tried to lure Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic to Old Trafford last week. Fan backlash stopped the move from materialising and Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi was another who was linked over the weekend. It is clear now that a new striker is the priority but, with the transfer window set to close in just over two weeks time, the fear is that a panic buy - similar to that of Odion Ighalo in 2020 - could be on the agenda. According to Caught Offside, Leicester City veteran Jamie Vardy has been contacted over a possible move to the Theatre of Dreams. Vardy has been linked to a move to Manchester United in the past, but it will no doubt be a surprise to see his name appear on a list of targets considering his ageing years, with the former England striker now 35-years-old. The 2019/20 Golden Boot winner is still a quality option though, and has hit double figures in each of the last seven seasons, scoring 15 times last season in the Premier League. He was also pivotal to Leicester's incredible Premier League triumph in the 2015/16 season, where he scored 24 goals including in a record 11 consecutive games. However, the report claims that Manchester United are only prepared to offer the player a one-year deal, something which may not appeal to the star. United could do much worse than Jamie Vardy, but it will still be a move which will attract scepticism from the fanbase. |
