前 唐竹割 Maé Karataké Wari: Shinkagé Ryu Hōgan Ha Kata

video thumbnail
This is a simple Kata where you cut diagonally up against the opponent’s wrist in the Jōdan upper stance, and then swing straight down. However, the second swing is a little special.

While the typical straight swing is called Kami-dachi-wari, this swing is called Karatake-wari, which means “breaking bamboo.” As the name implies, this is a powerful swing, as if you’re trying to cut the opponent right in half. You don’t move your feet at all, and you greatly sink your body as you swing with full power. This is a Kata for you to practice this powerful swing correctly, stabilizing the body so that your axis is not shaky. If you watch Seki Sensei swinging, you can see his body come to a clean stop.

"To revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 7,000 students nationwide"
Asayama Ichiden Ryu was once the number one Ryuha in Japan during the Edo period (1603~1868), with more than 7,000 students throughout the country.
