Singer had mild success with her violent husband Ike's band, then went on to become a worldwide phenomenon on her own.
Before she died last month at the age of 83, global pop diva Tina Turner was a walking, strutting, dancing, and shimmying ball of confusion and contradiction for the first half of her 60-year career. She was labeled as half of the R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner in the '60s and '70s, but she was really only a gear in her husband's entertainment machine; if she tried to do anything outside of her meticulously rehearsed role, Ike would immediately turn the screw.

At the time, Turner had a reputation as a sexually aggressive and self-assured woman. She was bawdy, sensual, and bold as she strutted the stage in a miniskirt, her characteristic legs moving almost independently of the rest of her body.After hearing Ike & Tina Turner's cover of Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin, with its slowed-down, sensuous rhythm, she cranked up the thermostat to Hindenburg proportions.

When she played the Acid Queen in Ken Russell's 1975 film adaptation of The Who's song Tommy, she embraced her role as a female predator to the fullest extent. Roger Daltrey (of The Who fame) plays a deaf, mute, and blind boy who is sent to the Acid Queen for sexual rehabilitation; she claims she will "make a man of him." Instead, she essentially abandons poor Tommy.

Despite her reputation as an uncontrollable wild child, Tina Turner was actually the victim of an abusive relationship. When she sought to end their relationship in 1960, he smashed a wooden shoe stretcher over her head. This was just the beginning of his pattern of abuse.

She eventually wed Ike and spent the next 16 years performing as part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue until leaving the marriage in 1976 with only the sequins on her back.Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, to Floyd and Zelma Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee. She attended Flagg Grove Elementary School and sang in the choir at Spring Hill Baptist Church as a child with her older half-sister Evelyn and older sister Ruby Alline in the little town of Nutbush, Tennessee. Because of Floyd's maltreatment, their mother left the house when Anna Mae was just 11 years old.Anna Mae was a natural carer who thought about becoming a nurse after high school. However, the allure of the music and entertainment industry was too great, and instead she and her sister Alline spent their time partying in St. Louis, Missouri, where they resided with their mother. Anna Mae was a dedicated fan of Ike Turner and his band, and she would always be found in the front row whenever they came to town. Ike gave in when she sang her heart out onstage during a commercial break at one of his gigs.

Ike recognised the potential in this young performer, but he also understood the need of guarding his cash cow. He registered the name "Tina Turner" in case she ever left, and he provided it to her as a stage name. She stated he "put up a little bit of a fight" over her name when they separated in 1978; he understood the magnitude of the Tina Turner name, but not even he could have foreseen the meteoric rise of her solo career.

River Deep - Mountain High, her Phil Spector-produced smash from 1966, is a prime example of the chaos and inconsistency that characterised her work at the time. Ronnie Spector, the music mogul's gifted wife, was subjected to years of abuse at the hands of the man who made his name with the iconic Wall of Sound. Spector convinced Ike to let him create the record without his participation because he thought Tina's voice was powerful and brassy enough for his Wall of Sound. After a heated exchange, Ike finally backed down, but not before insisting that his name be included in the public record. The song itself was an instrumental onslaught, with Spector heaping on instruments and Turner's vocals fighting for attention.Unfortunately, the album was a victim of US musical segregation, making a weak debut at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 because it was deemed too rocky for R&B radio and too soulful for white rock stations. However, it was a huge success in Europe, reaching #3 in the UK and propelling Ike & Tina into the mainstream at a period when it was exceptionally challenging for a black R&B group. Successes like "Proud Mary" and "Nutbush City Limits" proved that their fusion of rock and R&B was a winning formula. It would help Turner's fledgling solo career that she was already a household name on this side of the Atlantic.
