Mikaela Shiffrin Olympic Slalom Gold (Sochi 2014) |
|
At the 2014 winter olympics, 18 year old Mikaela Shiffrin stormed both slalom runs to win the gold medal. She became the youngest olympic slalom champion, youngest American alpine olympic champion, and the 4th youngest female to win an Alpine Skiing olympic gold. (Kathy Kreiner 1976 GS, Marielle Goitschel 1964 GS, and Michela Figini, who won the dowhill gold in 1984 at just 17 years old!) Marlies Schild, who was 14 years older than Shiffrin, won the silver in her final olympic race. She retired as the winningest female slalom skier of all time before getting passed by Shiffrin in 2019. And the bronze went to Kathrin Zettel, which was kind of a shock, but well earned as her grandmother passed away 2 days prior to the event.
And of course who can forget that recovery in the 2nd run by Shiffrin. (all credit to NBC and the IOC, I only made this for fun) |
