Prefabricating the Penn Pavilion

video thumbnail
Design and construction of megaprojects, such as the $1.5b Penn Pavilion, require advanced strategies to ensure success. The PennFIRST Team pushed the limits of prefabrication, all while utilizing local Philadelphia labor.

The Penn Pavilion is the largest capital project that Penn Medicine has constructed. The $1.5b, 1.5M SF facility will showcase state of the art healthcare design and technology throughout. The project, located in University City, is adjacent to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine (PCAM) and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The project team utilized a “multi-trade” facility, coined PennFAB, which was located 2 miles from the jobsite. PennFAB employed 60 full time union staff, comprised of carpenters, electricians, sheet metal workers, pipe fitters, welders, sprinkler fitters, painters and more. In addition to shifting labor from University City, over 250 deliveries were diverted from the project. Additional benefits from prefabrication include quality, worker safety and schedule reduction.
