A Key Principle that Christians Can Learn from Stoicism (Walking and Talking Spirituality, #75) |
|
The core principle of Stoicism is essentially recognizing the difference between what we can control and the things/people that I cannot control.
Trouble happens when we lose focus on this distinction. What can you control? Spiritual formation. Fueling yourself with good food. Getting adequate sleep. Actions (How you treat others and how you spend your time). Thoughts. Exercise. What can’t you control? Everything else: the economy, politics, Covid-19, actions by others, the words of others, the thoughts of others, natural disasters, taxes, and the list goes on. Christians though have a game changer: God. God has the future under control regardless of however good or bad the present appears to be… This frees us to show up and pay attention with the deep trust that God has more invested in us and the world than we do… What are you trying to control that is outside of your locus of control? What would it look like to turn your focus on your deep formation so that you can engage missionally with the world lovingly, compellingly, and courageously? Interested in a conversation?
