Over the years, numerous authors have written analyses on Mark Twain's life and work. Having hosted the author, Archibald Henderson, and having seen him a few times, Twain gave his approval for this biography. Henderson viewed this piece as a tribute to one of his biggest influences, a person who helped him navigate his youth and adolescence. He claims, "It comes from the heart of someone who had been a longtime fan of Mark Twain's writings before he ever got to know Samuel L. Clemens. It is an interpretation based on the notion that Mark Twain was a great American who, more than any other American before him, fully assimilated and appreciated his own nation and his own age."
