Lauterbrunnen is a small village in the Bernese Oberland region, surrounded by majestic mountains, waterfalls, and green valleys. Lauterbrunnen is also the gateway to some of the most popular destinations in the Swiss Alps, such as Mürren, Wengen, and Jungfraujoch. First, let’s talk about how to get to Lauterbrunnen. There are several ways to reach Lauterbrunnen, depending on where you are coming from. If you are flying into Switzerland, the nearest airport is Zurich, which is about two hours away by train. You can also take a bus from Zurich, which is cheaper but takes longer. Another option is to rent a car and drive to Lauterbrunnen, which gives you more flexibility and freedom to explore the area. However, keep in mind that most of the places around Lauterbrunnen are car-free, so you will need to park your car in a garage and use public transportation or walk to get around. Once you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, you will be amazed by the beauty and charm of this village. Lauterbrunnen means “many fountains” in German, and it is aptly named as it has 72 waterfalls cascading from the cliffs. The most famous waterfall is the Staubbach Falls, which is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. You can see it from almost anywhere in the village, and you can also hike up to the base of the falls and feel the spray of the water. Another impressive waterfall is the Trümmelbach Falls, which is hidden inside the mountain and can be accessed by a lift. The Trümmelbach Falls are a series of 10 glacial waterfalls that carry the meltwater from the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger mountains. The sound and sight of the water rushing through the rocks are incredible.

Lauterbrunnen is also a great base for exploring the nearby attractions in the Swiss Alps. You can take a cable car up to Mürren, a car-free village perched on a cliff overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Mürren is a cozy and quaint place with traditional chalets, flower gardens, and stunning views. From Mürren, you can continue to the Schilthorn, a mountain peak with a revolving restaurant and a panoramic terrace. The Schilthorn is famous for being the filming location of the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
