Being autistic in mainstream education | Beckett Cox | TEDxYouth@StPeterPort

video thumbnail
Beckett's talk is inspired by their recent diagnosis of being on the Autism spectrum, and how this has affected their life. Beckett talks about how autism is diagnosed and the issues of being autistic within mainstream education and specific specialised schools for autism.

Beckett says;

I had a choice, whether or not I told people I’m autistic and there are people here who don’t know that about me yet, but I’m not going to keep quiet. We want acceptance because we are here. In your schools, and in your workplaces, in your youth groups and in your events.

And we are not being invisible anymore.

A 17-year-old studying at Guernsey Grammar Sixth Form, Beckett was diagnosed as autistic in August 2015. With an interest in English and journalism, they enjoys writing about their experiences.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
