The MAS 49/56 was the final iteration of the self-loading 7.5x54mm main infantry rifle to the post-war French forces.

The MAS 49/56's direct impingement gas system design pre-dates the AR15 by decades (which the AR15 is not a true DI system, it is an "internal piston"), and was a deliberate design that had a mind for mass manufacturing, easy field maintenance and reliability in adverse locations.

Further, while many NATO countries may not understand the logic behind the 7.5 French cartridge, Henry and Ian delve into this in context of military deployment, and why the 7.5 French was a decent round for it's intended purposes.

Today, the MAS 49/56 still makes its rounds in Syria, the Middle East and many parts of Africa, but what should one expect from it's performance?
