Global National: Dec. 10, 2023 | WHO unanimously calls for immediate medical access to Gaza

video thumbnail
In our top story: Israel has ordered people in the centre of Khan Younis to leave for their own safety. Gaza's second largest city was the scene of fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants on Sunday, although many parts of the city have already been subjected to Israeli airstrikes for the past two months. With this evacuation order, the number of safer areas inside Gaza is reducing by the day. The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the situation as “catastrophic,” as it unanimously adopted a resolution calling for immediate medical access to Gaza. Redmond Shannon reports.

In addition, hostilities underscoring Israel's assault on Hamas are having a significant impact beyond the Gaza Strip, as a global diplomatic effort continues to unfold to find a way to stop the fighting. The countries nearest to the crisis are playing a key role in that initiative — efforts that briefly involved a direct conversation with Canada on Saturday. David Akin reports.

With only two days left of the United Nations (UN) COP28 climate summit, major energy producers are pushing back against an international commitment to end the use of oil and gas, with OPEC nations among those resisting the hardest. The latest version of negotiations, which were released Friday, shows countries considering several options ranging from agreeing to phasing out fossil fuels, phasing out "abated fossil fuels" with carbon capture and storage, to no mention of phasing out fossil fuels at all. Heather Yourex-West has more on the impasse.

In an exciting medical breakthrough, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two sickle cell treatments, including the first to use the gene-editing tool CRISPR. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world — mostly people of colour — live with this painful condition that shortens a person's lifespan. Farah Nasser explains how the new therapy works, and what else it could be used for.

Venezuela and Guyana have agreed to a high-level meeting next week, over the status of a dispute between the two South American nations. At the centre of the dispute is a 160,000 square-kilometre swathe of land where massive discoveries of offshore oil and gas have been made. Venezuela has placed troops at the border, while the U.S. held joint flyover drills with Guyana. Mike Drolet on what has happened and what might be next.

For decades, a mysterious safe has stayed sealed shut inside a historic hotel in downtown Winnipeg. It had been there before the Garrick Hotel was renovated, and with no one with a code to get it open, people were left wondering what was in store and if it involved a fortune. Thanks to a skilled safe breaker who cracked the code, they are wondering no more. Katherine Dornian has more on what they found inside.
