It's no secret that the "groupies" played a major part in the daring, debauched, and party-hearty culture of 1970s rock 'n' roll, but they did not live out the rest of their lives enjoying the fame granted to the musicians to whom they dedicated their youth.

Mostly in the '70s (but also in the '60s, '80s, and '90s), groupies were as much a part of a major band's concert tour as pyrotechnics, giant speakers, and roadies. Over the years, they would follow bands from town to town, hang out backstage, and attend afterparties with their favorite musicians. Why? To enjoy the scene, to party with living legends, and to be close to them - often sexually.

However, as the era of icons like Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and The Who came to an end, so also did the era of groupies. Like everyone else, these women lived interesting lives that took them in all kinds of interesting directions before they died. Unlike their classic rock cohorts, their deaths went largely unnoticed or unreported by the collective culture.
