Tony Jacklin became the first Englishman in 46 years to win the U.S. Open, by seven strokes over Dave Hill. Jacklin, who carried a four-shot lead into the final round, never wavered on Sunday, despite consecutive bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8. He rebounded with a long birdie at the ninth and shot a 2-under 70 for a seven-stroke victory.
