The 2021-22 COMPAS Program on Markets and the Open Society hosts Dr. Helen McCabe for a discussion of her new book, John Stuart Mill, Socialist, with CEHV Director Piers Norris Turner. The conversation examines how Mill's interest in socialism should inform our understanding of his political ideals and the relationship of socialism to open society.

Helen McCabe is a political theorist in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham (UK). She is the author of leading articles on Mill’s socialism, feminism, philosophy of persuasion, and his authorial relationship with Harriet Taylor Mill. In her new book, John Stuart Mill, Socialist, she argues that Mill’s commitment to a “qualified” socialism should inform our understanding of his long-term political project much more than is commonly accepted.

McCabe's research background includes the history of feminism and 'ideal' marriage, and she has worked on the meaning, experience, prevalence, causes, and consequences of forced and servile marriage, and how to end it. In January 2020, she became an AHRC Early Careers Researcher Leadership Fellow with a project on forced marriage and modern slavery.
