US skier Nina O’Brien saw her chances of medaling in the giant slalom end in frightening fashion.

O’Brien’s second run at the 2022 Olympics ended when she crashed near the finish line, to the horror of her competitors. O’Brien lost control after she clipped one of the final two gates, sending her skis and poles flying. It is feared she suffered a serious leg injury after her right leg bent awkwardly during the crash and she had to be stretchered off.

As O’Brien initially lay with her bottom half motionless, her competitors buried their heads in their hands out of shock and concern.

A spokesperson for the US ski team said O’Brien, 24, was “alert and responsive.”

“She is very tough and was calm,” the organization said. “She’s a fighter. She was worried about delaying the race. And also she wanted to know how fast she was skiing.”

O’Brien was considered the Americans’ second-best competitor in the giant slalom behind Mikaela Shiffrin, who skied off course and was disqualified from the event.

Competitors in the women's giant slalom held their breathe after seeing American skier Nina O'Brien suffer a nasty crash at the end of her second run. The giant slalom is one of the most dangerous events at the Winter Olympics and the women's competition was proving just that.
France's Tessa Worley had earlier caught her arm in a gate and hit the ground hard, although she was able to walk away on her own accord.

But there were genuine fears among those watching when O'Brien suffered her frightening crash in the second run.

The 24-year-old was one of the frontrunners and was on course for a spot in the medals, but disaster struck as she made full contact with the penultimate gate.

The collision sent O'Brien tumbling over the finish line with then-leader, Lara Gut-Behrami, looking visibly stunned as she watched on.
Medics were quick to rush to the American's aid as she lay stricken on the floor, appearing to hold her left leg.

There was a long stoppage as O'Brien was attended to be at least four medics before she was carried off in a stretcher.

Five-time Winter Olympics Graham Bell said O'Brien's crash wouldn't be a distraction for the runners coming after her.

He said: "It's really tough when you get a crash like that just puts the race on hold but the ski racers are used to it, they've been through this before.
"You've got to just keep focused and go through that pre-race plan."

An USA team spokesperson later confirmed that O'Brien was "alert and responsive" after her crash.

"Nina O'Brien crashed into the finish but she is alert and responsive,' a U.S. team spokesperson said.

"She is very tough and was calm. She's a fighter. She was worried about delaying the race. And also she wanted to know how fast she was skiing."
US skier Nina O'Brien was stretchered off the mountain at the National Alpine Ski Centre in Yanqing after appearing to break her leg in a horrific crash just moments before the finish line.

Competing in the women's giant slalom at the ongoing 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the 24-year-old was closing in on the finish when disaster struck.

Broadcasters were forced to cut away from footage to show views of the mountain after O'Brien lost her balance and crashed over the line - with her leg twisting 90 degrees.

O'Brien could be seen clutching her injured ankle after coming to a stop, but only had thoughts for others as she worried about causing a delay on the competition.Having received immediate care from paramedics, the young skiier was taken on a stretcher to hospital with the US Ski & Snowboard Team then offering an update.


"And also she wanted to know how fast she was skiing."O'Brien was sixth after her first run and had been competing for a possible medal before her second run came to a disastrous end.

Team-mate Paula Moltzan would go on to finish 12th after watching her colleague fall, with attention of the squad then turning back to the condition of O'Brien.
