AUCKLAND — A Sikh man in New Zealand saved the life of a 6-year-old involved in a car accident by stopping the bleeding of his head injury with his turban.

Harman Singh, 22, was at home on Friday morning when he heard the sound of car wheels screeching.

He immediately ran outside with his turban on, as his religion requires, and saw a 6-year-old boy hit by a car whose head was bleeding.

Singh didn't think it twice. He removed his turban and put it under the kid's head to stop the bleeding until emergency services and the boy's mother arrived at the scene.

Another man, Gagan Dhillon, also Sikh, was on his way to work that morning when he saw the accident and stopped to help.

"There was enough help as there was," he told the Sydney Morning Herald, "but being a Sikh myself, I know what type of respect the turban has. People just don't take it off — people die over it."

Singh was internationally praised for his act. For a Sikh, taking off one's turban in public is, as Dhillon said, not an insignificant act.

But Harman told the media he was just thinking about the accident and he did what he had to do.

The boy is now recovering in hospital and is in stable condition.
