Lauterbrunnen nestles in one of the most impressive valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock faces and high peaks. With its 72 roaring waterfalls as well as secluded valleys, flower-filled mountain pastures and secluded mountain hotels, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of Switzerland's most important nature reserves.

"Lauter Brunnen" - the name of the village alone already evokes the singularity of this landscape: the Lauterbrunnen valley has 72 waterfalls. The most emblematic is the Staubbach waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, which springs from a rock wall almost 300 meters high. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the valley in 1779, found inspiration in these roaring waters to compose his famous poem "Gesang der Geister über den Wassern".

In the heart of the “Schwarzer Mönch” mountain, hidden behind impressive rock walls, the Trümmelbach waterfall offers an equally grandiose natural spectacle. Nearly 20,000 liters of water per second rush down ten waterfalls of glacial origin totaling a height of around 200 meters. You can only see this spectacle in summer, by taking an elevator in the tunnel.


The village of Lauterbrunnen (795 m) is the starting point for the most famous tourist destinations in the Jungfrau region. A cog railway connects Lauterbrunnen to the Wengen sun terrace on the eastern flank of the Lauterbrunnen valley and to the Kleine Scheidegg, where you change trains to climb the Jungfraujoch.

On the other side is Mürren, a holiday resort, accessible from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Departing from Stechelberg, the cable car takes you to the summit of the Schilthorn, at an altitude of 2971m, famous for having served as the setting for the filming of a classic from the James Bond 007 series: "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

The Jungfrau in the background, flanked by the majestic panorama of the Bernese Alps, the spectacular Lauterbrunnen valley at your feet: Wengen offers a mountain experience in its purest form. In the pedestrian village of Lauberhorn, accessible only by the Wengernalpbahn, relaxation is guaranteed, whether hiking or sunbathing on the terraces of hotels and restaurants.

The resort is located on a sunny, wind-protected terrace at the foot of the Jungfrau, 400 meters above the Lauterbrunnen valley at 1274 m above sea level. The car-free village, steeped in tradition, offers a family-friendly ski and hiking area all around the Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg.

With its nostalgic wooden houses, the numerous holiday chalets scattered here and there and the Belle Époque hotels, this resort in the Bernese Oberland has managed to preserve the authentic character of a mountain village. The terrace, widely open to the southwest, guarantees above-average sunshine. The pedestrian village of Wengen has been accessible since 1893 by the "Wengernalpbahn" from Lauterbrunnen, where parking lots await cars.

You can easily reach the most important excursion destinations in the Jungfrau region from Wengen. From Kleine Scheidegg you can watch climbers of the Eiger North Face through a telescope - one of the most spectacular and difficult climbs in the world. By changing at Kleine Scheidegg, you arrive by train at Jungfraujoch. And from Lauterbrunnen, in the valley, you can reach the Schilthorn summit via Mürren or Stechelberg.
