We’ve endured a lot of ups and downs as a society since the start of the pandemic. In such unprecedented times, it can feel like the only way we can stay safe, or take back control, is by firing the toxic people from our lives. When we place the blame on other people for how we feel instead of looking at ourselves, we lose all of our power in the situation. By slowing down and acknowledging the role we play in our life circumstances, we can begin to give others what we sometimes fail to give ourselves: empathy and compassion. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru welcomes Dr. Omid and Alexis Naim to discuss how we can begin to create a culture based on connection and a shared human understanding. They share the core issues going on in society today, like unresolved family trauma and how it plays into separation, resentment, labeling, and black-or-white thinking. Dr. Omid Naim is a Western-trained psychiatrist who came to see the need for more holistic, spiritual, and community-based approaches to health care by seeing the limitations of the conventional model firsthand. He is the founder of Hope Integrative Psychiatry and the cofounder along with his wife, Alexis, of the nonprofit La Maida Project, which designs new models for families, communities, and organizations to become ecosystems of optimal health and well-being based on our innate human nature. Alexis Naim is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) specializing in the treatment of couples and family systems. She has been in private practice in psychotherapy for over 20 years, working with individuals and families through an attachment and trauma-based lens. Dhru, Dr. Omid, and Alexis share the meaning of developing true sovereignty in our lives, which means setting boundaries around our values and beliefs while still being vulnerable to having conversations with the people who disagree with us. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Omid and Alexis Naim dive into: -What we miss out on when we don’t recognize the role we play in our problems -What parts of firing the toxic people in your life are not healthy -The core issues going on in today’s world that make it difficult to engage in “dangerous conversations” -How to know when it's time to set up a boundary versus lean into the discomfort -How to create more empathy in our lives and the world -What does it mean if you’re always the person who can’t handle people? -Why we’re so unkind to ourselves -Common themes of people who set good boundaries in their lives -Dr. Omid and Alexis’s vision for a new future -The radical honesty movement and where it’s gone wrong -Final thoughts on toxic relationships -Where to follow Dr. Omid and Alexis Naim’s work This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker: https://www.insidetracker.com/DHRU AirDoctor: https://www.drhyman.com/filter InsideTracker provides detailed nutrition and lifestyle guidance based on your individual needs.
