In late December of 1968, three men - astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders - became the first people in history to see the Dark Side of the Moon as the crew of Apollo 8. This historic achievement set the stage for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s successful moon landing seven months later and produced one of the most enduring and significant photographs ever made - “Earthrise.” 50 years on, Omega commemorated this incredible journey with the introduction of the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8.

Originally introduced in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster was made truly famous through association with NASA’s manned space program, with the first Speedmaster flying into space in 1962. Since its official qualification for manned space missions in 1965, the Omega Speedmaster has proven itself an invaluable tool, replacing broken clocks and timing critical burns on a number of missions.

Cased in 44.25mm of black ceramic, this very special Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon honors the history of the Speedmaster while simultaneously paying tribute to the singular mission of the Apollo 8 crew. Through the watches' meticulously skeletonized dial, one can see a beautiful execution of the Omega Cal. 1861 - the long-standing direct descendent of the hand-wound calibers used in NASA-issued Speedmasters of the 1960s.

Blackened and laser-ablated, this rendition of the famous movement offers a realistic view of the lunar surface. While the face of the watch reveals the familiar side of the moon we have looked up at for generations, reversing the watch allows a view few have had the opportunity to experience, with details of the Dark Side of the Moon contrasting brilliantly with the beautiful Swiss chronograph movement.
