This video is the first of three shows representing an astounding decade in popular music. Similar to the two decades prior, the 1970s saw the birth and growth of many styles. However the rate and boldness of these changes can not be compared to any other time. Psych Rock, Folk, Heavy Metal, Disco, Funk, Punk and Prog Rock are among the genres that shaped the musical landscape of the 70s. In this episode we explore mostly Pop and Rock that is very clearly the direct culmination of the styles created in the latter years of the 1960s. However you can also clearly hear the evolution of recording equipment, studio techniques and complexity of songwriting that really allowed this to be such a decade of innovation and exploration.

In previous episodes of our Radio Hits series we have featured music from the 1950s, 1960s & 1980s seeming to skip over the crucial decade of the 1970s. When we curated music for the other decades, the issue was making sure we had enough hit records to properly represent what was played by radio stations during that time. We had the opposite problem when it came to the 70s. We had far too many great 45s to choose from and we were forced to make some difficult decisions. Some were chosen for their chart position and overall popularity while others were included because they have a special traveling back in a time machine quality to them. We hope you enjoy the records that made the cut and enjoy this musical journey.
