Carl von Clausewitz and Strategy, Planning, & Tactics

video thumbnail
Carl von Clausewitz and Strategy, Planning, and Tactics | Carl von Clausewitz was a famous Prussian Army General and theorist of war who explains his principles of success and failure in his book “On War”. To this day, "On War" is studied around the world in military academies and business schools. Since his approach to strategy, planning and tactics have been visited so often in the context of military doctrine and business application, I thought it would be fun to see how we can apply it to the individual as well.

The power of threes:
Understanding the difference between strategy, planning, and tactics, not in warfare or business, but for yourself.

1. Strategy: "The strength of any strategy lies in its simplicity."
· Complexity paralyzes. Simplicity empowers. The KISS principle applies in all situations!
· What is my wholistic purpose in life and in pursuit of a career? Do I have clear goals?
· Revisit your internal strategy often-- Clausewitz likes to say there is always changing terrain, new chaotic elements, and unexpected opportunities!

2. Planning: "We don’t create a strategy with a plan. We execute it with a plan."
· What are the main objectives that need to be accomplished, or large hurdles that need to be achieved in order to make your personal strategy work? This is ACTION...it is the cohesive actions needed to execute it.
· An example would be that your (deliberate) Professional Development journey is an expression of your overall life strategy.

3. Tactics: Daily habits that are forged through internal discipline.
· Habits like fitness, mindfulness, yoga, etc, are the small things that have big returns.
· Treating others with respect 100% of the time is a habit worth embracing that brings both tangible and intangible effects.
· Victim or Victor? Which one are you?
· Are you an engaged employee? The ones that are, reap the rewards.

No one, no matter who you are has unlimited resources (time, energy, finances), therefore, it is about making choices on how you concentrate those limited resources to achieve competitive advantage; all else follows from there! #Strategy #Planning #Tactics

The Iron Sharpens Iron Leadership Movement will give you a focused set of ideas applicable in your personal and professional life. The greater focus you spend on the “tools” you have and how you “forge” your relationships and presence, the stronger the others become. This movement will showcase that to make yourself better, there is a mutual benefit to making others better through mentorship, followership, and leading.

This is not a new “leadership theory,” but a series of “leadership behaviors” that work because the core concepts are timeless and have endured thousands of years if presented in a current and actionable way they will endure. Remember, it is all about executing, doing, performing. In the end, you must act.
