Dangerous Ground with John Suval |
|
John Suval will discuss his new book from Oxford University Press, Dangerous Ground: Squatters, Statesmen, and the Antebellum Rupture of American Democracy. The book underscores how Jacksonian Democrats’ dangerous flirtation with squatters faced pushback at every turn, from the armed resistance of Mexico, the Seminoles, and Sacs, to the deft political maneuvers of the Cherokees and Potawatomis, to the resilience and creativity of Frank and Lucy McWorter, an enslaved couple who secured their freedom and founded a frontier town. Suval is a historian of the 19th-century U.S., specializing in Jacksonian political culture and the American West. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Visit: johnsuval.com.
