The floods, labeled as a rare event by the UN, have displaced hundreds of thousands of people in Somalia and neighboring East African countries. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed that approximately 1.6 million people in Somalia could be impacted by the heavy seasonal downpours.

This dire situation is exacerbated by the convergence of two climate phenomena, El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole, intensifying the effects of the heavy rains. The crisis, triggered by the precipitation that commenced in early October, has already claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals and forced over 300,000 residents out of their homes in Somalia. Moreover, towns and villages across northern Kenya have been submerged under the rising floodwaters.

The floods have not spared camps housing those displaced by an Islamist insurgency and a severe drought, marking a second evacuation for the affected population, according to aid groups. The extensive displacement, escalating humanitarian needs, and the substantial destruction of property are anticipated to persist, with OCHA warning that approximately 1.5 million hectares (3.70 million acres) of farmland could be devastated.

Martin Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General and the UN's Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, voiced concern about the situation. He highlighted the connection between extreme weather linked to El Niño and the escalating humanitarian needs in vulnerable communities in Somalia and other regions. Griffiths emphasized the importance of proactive measures to address these impending crises, stating, "We know what the risks are, and we need to get ahead of these looming crises." The call to action comes as East Africa grapples with the profound impact of the unprecedented flooding, urging swift and effective responses to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
