Why We Need to Change Our Perception of Refugees | Hamaila Qureshi | TEDxSpeedwayPlaza

video thumbnail
Those people. Foreigners. ISIS. Dogs. Animals. Outsiders. Terrorists.....These are some of the many disparaging remarks and connotations given to refugees coming to the United States and elsewhere, looking for a new place to call home. Hamaila discusses how avoiding such harmful rhetoric, and instead serving as custodians of community building, we can bring about real change to those who look to us for a second chance.

Hamaila Qureshi is a lifelong student and activist. While completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas, she was the president of the local chapter of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) and during her term, the team raised the funds to rescue two refugees. She continued working with LiNK after graduation and during her internship Hamaila empowered 300+ Rescue Teams around the world by creating and distributing resources. Hamaila hopes to pursue graduate education in design in order to empower and better the lives of people around the world.
