John McEnroe’s revealing interview with Novak Djokovic was aired on ESPN in America and it has thrown up plenty of headlines.

The world No 1 spoke at length about his absence from the game due to his decision not to take a Covid vaccine, while he also reflected on his deportation from Australia due to that issue back in 2022.

McEnroe also played some points with Djokovic in an interview filmed before the US Open, where the Serbian was relaxed as he reflected on his remarkable life and career in tennis.

The debate over who deserves to be remembered as the greatest player of all-time was inevitably raised, with Djokovic suggesting he was a better player because of his great rivalries with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

He also suggested he took a lot from Federer in one key area of preparation ahead of big events.

“One thing that I learned from Federer is how to organise my schedule and to be able to peek at the Grand Slams,” said Djokovic.

“He was one of the first players to really take the scheduling preparation to a different level.

“I was inspired by that and I was making notes. I was taking a lot from that, from that scheduling and observing him and his team and how he has gone about it.”

Amid the more serious reflections of the Djokovic story, McEnroe also had some fun with his star guest.

One of the more humorous moments of the interview came as McEnroe challenged Djokovic to repeat some of his most famous on-court put-downs to umpires in alternative languages.

So we were treated to the sight of Novak saying “you cannot be serious” and “answer the question, jerk”, much to Djokovic’s amusement.

Djokovic completed several interviews after his US Open win and during a chat with CBS, he revealed what motivated him to continue in the sport despite achieving so much.

“Setting goals and objectives is extremely important,” he stated.

“One of the reasons why athletes resonate with people is we can do through the lowest of lows and highest of highs in a very short time span in a game.

“This incredibly wide spectrum of emotions you go through and overcoming challenges and obstacles is something people relate to.

“It is very important to have clarity of what you want in life, understanding who you are. We all have different challenges and we have to accept that.

“When you accept that you won’t always be on top and appreciate that the time you spend dealing with that disappointment needs to be cut, then you can move on.

“I try to live in the moment as much as possible. That isn’t always possible because every experience in life leaves a mark and you have to deal with that.

“When you accept there will be moments that are not perfect, then you can deal better with them. There are no limits to how far you can go if you focus on the positives.”
