The acronym RAIN is a simple and easy-to-remember method for cultivating mindfulness and compassion, and it consists of the four phases outlined below: Recognize what is taking place, and Allow the experience to be present in its current state. Investigate with keen interest and thought; Nurture yourself with kindness and compassion. You may take your time and explore RAIN as a stand-alone meditation, or you can progress through the steps anytime you are experiencing difficult thoughts or sensations. I made the decision to take a break and called on RAIN to assist me in dealing with my worry over not being prepared. I got up from my desk and sat down in a comfy chair for a few minutes to get my bearings before getting started. The first step toward healing was to simply recognize what was going on inside of me—the circle of anxious thoughts and guilty feelings. The second stage was to allow what was happening to take place by taking deep breaths and allowing it to be. Despite the fact that I didn't like how I was feeling, my objective was not to correct or alter anything, and, maybe more importantly, I did not want to criticize myself for feeling nervous or guilty about it. Allowance made it possible for me to collect and deepen my attention before moving on to the third phase, which was to investigate what seemed the most challenging. With a keen curiosity, I focused my attention on the actual sensations of worry that I was experiencing in my body—physical tightness, tugging, and pressure around my heart. After asking the nervous part of myself what it believed, the response was a painfully familiar one: it felt like I was doomed to disappointment. In the event that I didn't have every instruction and tale fully prepared in advance, I would do a poor job and disappoint the audience. I also disappointed someone I cared deeply about because of my anxiety, which made me inaccessible to my mother as well. Following my awakening to this sense of shame and anxiety, I continued my investigation, speaking with the torn, nervous part of myself. "What do you require the most at this time?" I inquired. I could see right away that it required extra attention and reassurance that I was not going to fail in any significant manner. It was necessary to have faith that the teachings would be channeled via me, as well as faith in the love that flowed between my mother and myself. After reaching the fourth stage of RAIN, Nurture, I sent a loving message internally, straight to that nervous part of myself: "Don't worry, dear. Everything will be OK. " Everything will be OK; we've gone through this many times before... we're working hard to meet our objectives on all fronts. " Throughout my body, I could sense a warm, reassuring sensation spreading throughout it. A noticeable change occurred after that: my heart began to soften a little, my shoulders began to relax, and my thoughts became more clear and open.
