Bunkai: Pinan 2. A Powerful Control And Takedown. |
|
Mastering any kata means understanding and applying the applications. I like to break the process of mastering kata into four stages:
1. Dosa 動作: Learn the techniques, footwork, kiais, balance, timing, and points of power stress, so that the kata performance is sharp and has presence 2. Shin-Gi-Tai 心・技・体: Understand and drill the correct, effective use the techniques: punch the punch, block the block, kick the kick with volition and energy 3. Bunkai 分解して: Break the kata down into small, one- or two-technique flows. Experiment with different possibilities by applying the concept of "A Block Is A Lock Is A Blow Is A Throw". Work with a partner to pressure-test the skills and reveal weaknesses. Some ideas may be really good and others won't survive even minimal resistance. 4. Oyo 応用: Take the techniques you have worked on in your bunkai training and test them with a trusted training partner under an increasing level of non-compliance until you can make them work. Period. Today we are looking at just one possibility from Pinan 2. I have found that this technique can be used in a range of different scenarios and distances.
