The band stated they never recorded "Painted On My Heart," a claim partially substantiated by subsequent events. Industry speculation hinted at financial disagreements or label distribution conflicts as reasons for Aerosmith's version being axed from the film's soundtrack, which was then performed by The Cult and released under Island Records, despite The Cult not being affiliated with that label.

An Aerosmith demo version of the song did emerge, however, on a promotional CD-R acetate, hinting at a possible early recording. This demo, featuring Steven Tyler's vocals, presented a mellow and melodic tune distinct from The Cult's interpretation, with hints of Spanish Flamenco influences. Despite its raw, unpolished state, the demo showcased Tyler's unique harmonies and a different musical direction for Aerosmith.

The story took another twist with Steven Tyler's 2011 autobiography revelation, confirming Aerosmith did record the song, though whether a fully produced version featuring the entire band exists remains speculative. Tyler's account suggests at least a vocal recording was made, with the possibility of further production during the "Just Push Play" sessions.
