This band was formed in 1968 by guitarrist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones first as the 'New Yardbirds' before they changed their name to 'Led Zeppelin' due to a cease and desist by former Yardbird member Chris Dreja. They choose 'Led Zeppelin' after 'Lead Balloon' was also in the consideration.

In January 1969 the band released their first self-titled album. It peaked at #6 in the UK album charts and #10 in the USA, #11 in Germany among other places. It has been certified 8x platinum in the US, double platinum in the UK and Australia and Diamond in Canada among other places. At the end of the year they released their 2nd album 'Led Zeppelin II' which topped the UK and US album charts, as well the charts in Germany and Canada and peaked at #2 in Australia. The album has been certified Diamond (12x platinum) in the USA, 9x platinum in Canada, 4x in the UK and Australia and platinum in Germany among other places. The sinlge 'Whole Lotta Love' peaked at #2 in Germany and topped the Australian Single Charts and reached #4 in the USA. The single was released without the consent of the band however.

Their next album 'Led Zeppelin III' was released in 1970 and topped the charts in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada and peaked at #3 in Germany among other places. It has been certified 6x platinum in the USA, 3x platinum in Australia and platinum in the UK among other places. The fourth album, which has been dubbed 'Led Zeppelin IV' even though it was released without a title, peaked at #1 in the UK and Canada, #2 in the USA and Australia and #5 in Germany. It has been certified 2x Diamond (24x platinum) in the USA and Canada, 9x platinum in Australia and 6x platinum in the UK among other places. It sold over 37 million times worldwide and is one of the most successful albums ever. Even though never released as a single the track 'Stairway To Heaven' became the most requested song in US rock radio in the 70s.

In 1973 the band released their next album 'Houses Of The Holy' which topped the album charts in the UK, USA. Australia and Canada among other places. It has been certified Diamond (11x platinum) in the USA, double platinum in Australia and platinum in the UK. After touring the world the band took time to form their own label 'Swan Song', named after an unreleased song.

They released their first album on their on label in1975, a double album named 'Physical Graffiti'. It peaked at #1 in the UK, USA and Canada and has been certified Diamond (16x platinum) in the USA, triple platinum in Australia and double platinum in the UK. In 1976 a forced hiatus on touring due to a car-accident by singer Robert Plant led to their recording and released of their next album 'Presence'. It peaked at #1 in the UK and the USA and has been certified triple platinum in the USA and platinum in the UK.

After various incidents and the death of Robert Plant's son in 1977 the band stopped touring which led to speculation about Led Zeppelin's future. In 1978 the group released their final studio album 'In Through The Out Door' which topped the album charts in the UK, USA and Canada. It has been certified 6x platinum in the USA, double platinum in Australia and platinum in the UK.

On September 25th, 1980 drummer John Bonham died in his sleep due to asphyxiation. A planned tour was cancelled and the group disbanded.
