In the last video we talked about the piezoelectric effect. When I was researching this topic, I ran into something called piezoelectric surgery which naturally caught my attention. It uses something called the reverse piezoelectric effect. That is, if you apply an alternating electrical current to piezoelectric materials, then the material will actually start to vibrate. You can imagine how this may be useful in surgery, you can use the vibrational energy to power special drills or probes that cut through materials with ease. The mechanism behind how these piezoelectric surgical devices work is fascinating - there's many different physical principles at play that help it cut. What's more interesting is how these devices exhibit tissue selectivity - that is, they can cut a certain type of tissue but leave other types of tissue unharmed. For example, you can drill bone but leave soft tissues like skin, muscle and nerves unharmed!
