SPRING HILL, Tenn. - There are water worries for one of Middle Tennessee's fastest growing cities. The city of Spring Hill needs more water. One emergency could drain the tanks and send water pressure plummeting.
At Moe's Southwest Grill in Spring Hill, food is what attracts customers, but water is essential to staying open. You have to have it to run a business, especially a food business, says Moe's General Manager Andrew Emerson.
It wasn't long ago that Moe's and other nearby businesses lost water after a pipe broke. The event didn't go unnoticed at city hall. One of the things we have really tried to do is keep up with the infrastructure, says Spring Hill City Administrator Victor Lay.
Spring Hill is a fast growing city, and in the center of town there's not enough water storage capacity. If a pipe breaks water pressure trickles. The city now hopes to build a water tower to keep up with growth and prevent a water emergency. Really critical to us for the volume of water that we need to have at any given time, and just to maintain that pressure at any given time, says Victor Lay. The new water tower is also essential for the new Tri-Star Emergency room and Maury Regional Medical Center in Spring Hill. We can't afford to have a situation where our freestanding emergency room and the other medical complex is out of water or has low pressure, says Lay.
The city orginally tried to acquire land from a local developer, but it may now may need to use an alternate site nearby. The pricetag could top $1.75 million.
Businesses like Moe's Southwest Grill know in the end that water is vital. It says they care about the city businesses and they're going to take care of us, which is a good thing because it's a symbiotic relationship, says Emerson.
The city hopes to have the land for the new water tower within the next few months. The city administrator says this is a priority. Spring Hill could have more than 50,000 residents by 2030.
