📖 The Story of Our 2022/2023 Scottish Cup Victory

video thumbnail
Celtic’s defence of their Scottish Cup title begins this Sunday as Highland League side Buckie Thistle come to Celtic Park in the fourth round.

It’s a story of David and Goliath, with three full divisions separating the Scottish Premiership and the Highland League as the hoops of Glasgow take on the hoops of the North-East.

Ahead of the first Scottish Cup game of the 2023/24 campaign for Brendan Rodgers’ side, we take a look back on last season and how the cup was won and brought back to Paradise.

FOURTH ROUND – CELTIC 5-0 GREENOCK MORTON

Celtic’s journey started on January 21 2023, exactly one year from the start of this campaign against Buckie Thistle.

Greenock Morton made the short journey to Celtic Park and the Championship side was dispatched 5-0 despite a spirited opening display from the team from Cappielow.

Celtic ensured a couple of nervy moments early on before they raced into a 4-0 lead at half-time, with Aaron Mooy scoring from the spot and Kyogo grabbing a double – David Turnbull grabbed the other.

In the second-half, the only goal came from the Australian Mooy with Celtic easily moving into the fifth round.

FIFTH ROUND – CELTIC 5-1 ST MIRREN

It was another five-star showing at Celtic Park in the Scottish Cup with a dominant display over fellow Premiership side, St Mirren.

Leading 1-0 early on through Daizen Maeda, four goals arrived late in the game, with Reo Hatate adding the second on 76 minutes, then Hyeongyu Oh with his first Celtic goal, then Matt O’Riley and finally Hatate again in injury time.

St Mirren did grab a consolation with five minutes remaining through Mark O’Hara but it was a job well done once again from Celtic.

QUARTER-FINAL – HEARTS 0-3 CELTIC

Drawing Hearts at Tynecastle in the Scottish Cup is always a fixture fraught with danger, but not on this occasion.

The Celts got off to the best possible start in Gorgie when Aaron Mooy smashed home a stunning move inside two minutes.

Kyogo added a second just before half-time to put Celtic into a commanding position before Cameron Carter-Vickers grabbed a late third to seal a wonderful victory in the capital.

SEMI-FINAL – CELTIC 1-0 RANGERS

Celtic booked their place in the final with another derby victory in 2023, this time winning 1-0 at Hampden Park through Jota’s first-half goal.

A fiery derby encounter was won through the excellence of Daizen Maeda who pounced on a Rangers error and delivered a perfect cross for the Portuguese winger to score with his head.

No more goals were required and Celtic backed up their League Cup final win a few months earlier with this Scottish Cup victory, and the hunt for the Treble continued into the final game of the Scottish football season.

FINAL – CELTIC 3-1 INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE

History was earned in the first weekend of June as Celtic won a record-breaking eighth treble win a 3-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

In a slightly more cagey affair than predicted, the champions of the league and League Cup took the lead through Kyogo in the first-half.

Liel Abada added a second in the second-half before the Championship side roared back with a late goal to bring the tie back to life.

However, Jota got the all-important third goal in stoppage time and Celtic lifted the Scottish Cup for the 41st time.
