Stu Jay Raj - TEDx Talk Commentary ‘Installing A Linguistic Operating System for Your Mind’ |
|
In 2016 I had the honour of doing 2 TEDx talks - One in English at the TEDx Chiangmai event (done in English), and one in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Petaling Street TEDx event (done in Mandarin Chinese … and several other dialects).
Both were about how to ‘Install a New Linguistic Operating System For Your Mind’ to help learn languages more efficiently. People have been asking for the clips despite them being on the respective youtube channels. I have included this annotated version here. For the full Hires version of the English clip in Chiangmai, please visit the TEDx Chiangmai channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u93STioO-FQ For the full Hires version of my Chinese presentation, please visit the TEDx Petaling street channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_MrHIX0KQw To use the tools I use / talk about in the clips, visit stujay.com. You can also purchase the book from there if you’re in Thailand, otherwise you can buy it from Asia Books (Thailand Only), or outside of Thailand, order via Createspace.com (preferable as they support authors more), or Amazon.com. Here is the blurb from the original clip: We have some of the most amazing hardware and software built into us to learn languages. We were born to learn languages, but later we do things that make learning language more difficult. We change our “software”. Stuart proposes ways to implement a “new operating system” as a way to learn new languages more effectively and effortlessly. His research and experience suggest that the best way to learn new languages is to have a good understanding of how the body produces language and then tap into that by being receptive and letting our environment teach language as it used by the owners of that language. His talk is in English. Stuart Jay Raj is an Australian polyglot specializing in the languages, dialects and cross-cultural communication of South East Asia and China. He is a professional simultaneous interpreter in Thai, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Indonesian and provides language and cultural training for multinational companies. He also hosts his own TV program on Thailand’s Channel 5. With a degree in Cognitive and Applied Linguistics from Griffith University, he is an expert in the field of language acquisition. Stuart’s background knowledge of Sanskrit, Khmer, Thai, Lao and various Chinese and Indian languages, dialects and minority languages enables him to present a unique perspective on the languages, cultures and business across the region. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
