Omega Silver Snoopy Speedmaster Hands-on Review

When Omega releases an Apollo 13 commemorative Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, failure is not an option. As the sequel to 2003's Speedmaster Professional Silver Snoopy Award, the 2015 Apollo 13 45th Anniversary Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy Award raises Omega's game in every respect.

More exclusive, more distinctive, and more memorable than its predecessor, the latest 1,970-piece limited edition Speedmaster Professional is ready to satisfy the hardest of the hardcore Omega enthusiasts.

At 42mm in stainless steel, the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy presents a familiar profile, but the dial is anything but routine. The white dial with black hands and elaborate graphics is unlike anything in the contemporary Omega Speedmaster catalog. Within the constant seconds subdial, Peanuts comic stalwart Snoopy the Dog (a NASA mascot since 1968) has been rendered in a solid block of Super LumiNova glowing material.

Snoopy's comic-style thought bubble, "Failure is not an option," reprises a line made famous by Ed Harris in Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" motion picture. From the index at 12 to the 14-second mark of the primary dial, fourteen comic-style cells trace the arc of a second phrase "What could you do in 14 seconds?" This was the timed period of the mid-course rocket thrust course correction by Apollo 13 astronauts... time with assistance from Omega, naturally.

Omega goes to great lengths to ensure unique and exclusive content for owners of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy. Even the humble tachymeter scale receives massive qualitative upgrades in the form of a scratch-resistant ceramic surface and fully luminescent calibrations (Grey Side of the Moon-style). The crystal, which usually takes the form of acrylic ("Hesalite") on standard-issue Moonwatches, here receives an upgrade to robust sapphire.

On the case back, a blue enamel backdrop with inset silver powered "stars" emulates the infinite depth of the cosmos and serves as a backdrop to a hand-carved rendition of Snoopy himself. The design of NASA's Snoopy was executed by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz himself in 1968, and each 925 sterling silver Snoopy case back medallion has been meticulously carved for this Omega Speedmaster limited edition. Due to the freehand technique employed by the engravers, no two examples of this medallion are identical.

Beneath the spectacular artisanal case back, Omega equips the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy Award limited edition with the gold standard of star-bound chronographs: the Omega caliber 1861. With its rugged construction, 48-hour power reserve, dependable manual winding mechanism, and trialed-by-fire credentials, the 1861 remains an all-time great in the pantheon of "tool watch" movements. Flight qualified to this day, the caliber 1861 continues to power every Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch flown by NASA.
