Lauterbrunen-The Most Spectacular Landscape in Switzerland

video thumbnail
Lauterbrunnen is a village and municipality in the administrative district of Interlaken-Oberhasli in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The latter includes the other villages of Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh, and several other hamlets.

Lauterbrunnen nestles in one of the most impressive valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock walls and high peaks. With its 72 roaring waterfalls as well as secluded valleys, flower-filled alpine pastures and secluded mountain hotels, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of Switzerland's most important nature reserves.

The description
"Lauter Brunnen" - the name of the village alone already evokes the singularity of this landscape: the valley of Lauterbrunnen has 72 waterfalls. The most emblematic is the Staubbach waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, which plunges from a rock wall almost 300 meters high. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the valley in 1779, found inspiration in these roaring waters to compose his famous poem "Gesang der Geister über den Wassern".

At the heart of the “Schwarzer Mönch” mountain, hidden behind impressive rock faces, the Trümmelbach waterfall offers an equally grandiose natural spectacle. Nearly 20,000 liters of water per second rush down ten waterfalls of glacial origin totaling a height of about 200 meters. You can only attend this spectacle in summer, by taking an elevator in the tunnel.

Winter :
The extensive ski areas of Wengen-Little Scheidegg and Mürren-Schilthorn are quickly accessible by lift. Throughout the Jungfrau region, 45 transport facilities, 213 km of slopes, leisure parks, 100 km of winter hiking trails and 50 km of toboggan runs await winter sports enthusiasts. The Lauterbrunnen Valley has many cross-country ski trails.

Summer :
The village of Lauterbrunnen (795 m) is the starting point for the most famous tourist destinations in the Jungfrau region. A rack railway connects Lauterbrunnen to the Wengen Sun Terrace on the eastern flank of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and to the Kleine Scheidegg, where you change trains to climb the Jungfraujoch.

On the other side is Mürren, a holiday resort, accessible from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Departing from Stechelberg, the cable car takes you to the top of the Schilthorn, at an altitude of 2971m, famous for having served as the setting for the filming of a classic from the James Bond 007 series: "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

After a few kilometers of a narrow mountain road downstream from Lauterbrunnen is, at 1024 m altitude, perched on a steep terrace, the peaceful little mountain village of Isenfluh, starting point for hikes in the romantic valley of Saus and further to Mürren or the Lobhörner.
