Many of our most widely used websites, social networks and mobile phone apps were developed for something quite different to what we now use them for. Users have taken technology and changed it to suit their own needs. This creates both challenges and opportunities for developers when designing software. The unexpected is, in fact, often the essential element, for which it can be impossible to plan.
